Indications

Mode of Action
- Competitively blocks beta1 (cardiac) receptors
- Beta1 selective (cardioselective) beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist
- Markedly hydrophilic
- Poorly penetrates lipid cell membranes
Dosage and Administration
- Initial dose of 50mg for hypertension
- Initial dose of 50mg for angina pectoris
- Initial intravenous dose for acute myocardial infarction followed by oral doses
Interaction
- Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Additive effect with calcium channel blockers
- Potential negative effects with disopyramide and amiodarone
- Exacerbates rebound hypertension when coadministered with clonidine
- Decreased hypotensive effects with prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs
- Risk of severe allergic reaction in patients with a history of anaphylaxis
- Increased risk of bradycardia when used with digitalis glycosides
Contraindications
- Sinus bradycardia
- Greater than first degree heart block
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or any of the drug's components

Pregnancy and Lactation

- Clinically significant bradycardia reported in breast-fed infants
