- Additive effect with catecholamine-depleting drugs

- Risk of severe bradycardia and heart failure when administered with disopyramide
- Additive negative chronotropic properties when administered with amiodarone
- Exacerbation of rebound hypertension when coadministered with clonidine
- Decreased hypotensive effects when used with prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs
- Risk of more severe allergic reaction in patients with a history of anaphylaxis
- Contraindications:
- Sinus bradycardia
- Heart block greater than first degree
- Cardiogenic shock
- Overt cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to atenolol or any components

- Reversible mental depression
- Mesenteric arterial thrombosis
