Pharmacology

Inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis
Activity against gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria
Inhibition of protein synthesis
Disruption of DNA synthesis

Dosage & Administration

Ointment application
Cleaning the area before application
Removal of pus or crusts
Application two to three times daily
Dusting powder application
Non-sterile dusting powder
Light dusting applied up to 4 times daily

Interaction

Increased risk of nephrotoxicity
Enhancement of neuromuscular-blocking agents
Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect with other aminoglycosides and drugs
Impairment of absorption of other drugs
Enhancement of specific drug effects
Altered INR when given with anticoagulants
Inactivation of oral typhoid vaccine

Precautions & Warnings

Avoid use on large open wounds or severely injured skin
Avoid use on areas exuding large volumes of fluid
Avoid use for otitis external with perforated eardrum
Consult physician for deep wounds, animal bites, or serious burns
Discontinue use if condition persists or worsens
Not for longer than 1 week without physician direction

Use in Special Populations

Suitable for use in children at adult dose, with reduced dose in infants
Not recommended for neonates
