Pharmacology

Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
Active against gram-positive bacteria
Neomycin binds to the 30S subunits of bacterial ribosome
Inhibits protein synthesis
Active against gram-negative aerobes

Dosage & Administration

Ointment application
Dusting powder application
Two to three times daily application for ointment
Up to 4 times daily application for dusting powder

Interaction

Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with other nephrotoxic drugs
Enhanced action of neuromuscular-blocking agents
Additive nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect with other aminoglycosides
May impair the absorption of other drugs
Enhance the effect of acarbose

Precautions & Warnings

Avoid use on large open wounds or severely injured skin
Do not use on areas that exude large volumes of fluid
Avoid use for otitis external with perforated eardrum
Consult physician for deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns
Discontinue if condition persists or worsens

Use in Special Populations

Suitable for use in children at adult dose
Dose reduction in infants
Not recommended for use in neonates
