Description
- Indicated for spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis
- Indicated for flexor spasms, concomitant pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity
- Indicated for skeletal muscle spasm resulting from rheumatic disorders
- Indicated for spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases
- Indicated for cerebrovascular accidents or neoplastic or degenerative brain disease
- Inhibits both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level
- Stimulates GABA B receptors
- Inhibits the release of glutamate and aspartate
- Exerts an antinociceptive effect
- Dosage for adults and children over 10 years: 5 mg 3 times daily
- Dosage for children under 10 years: started with 2.5 mg given 4 times daily, then raised according to requirement
- Max daily dosage: 100 mg
- Increased sedation may occur if taken with CNS acting agents, alcohol, or synthetic opiates
- Combined treatment with antihypertensives may increase fall in blood pressure
- Concomitant administration with tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate the effects of Albafen
- Reports of mental confusion, hallucinations, headaches, nausea, and agitation in patients with Parkinson's disease receiving treatment with Albafen and levodopa
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the product
- Common adverse reactions include transient drowsiness, daytime sedation, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue
- Pregnancy category B3
- Excreted in breast milk
- Lower doses should be used for patients with impaired renal function or undergoing chronic hemodialysis
- Patients with etiology of psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, depressive or manic disorders, or confusional states should be treated cautiously
- Albafen may be used in patients with epilepsy and muscle spasticity under appropriate supervision
- Should be used with caution in patients with or with a history of peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or hepatic, renal, or respiratory failure
- Careful monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular function is essential
- During treatment, neurogenic disturbances affecting bladder emptying may improve
- Albafen has not significantly benefited stroke patients
- Appropriate laboratory tests should be periodically performed in patients with hepatic diseases or diabetes mellitus
- Centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant
- Storage: Keep below 30°C, away from light and moisture, out of the reach of children
