Description
- A medication indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
Indications
- Treats bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible isolates of specific bacteria
Pharmacology
- Contains besifloxacin, an 8-chloro fluoroquinolone with activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
- Plasma concentration data in adult patients
Dosage & Administration
- For adults and children 1 year and older
- Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days
Pediatric Use
- Efficacy demonstrated in controlled clinical trials for pediatric patients one year or older
Geriatric Use
- No overall differences in safety and effectiveness observed between elderly and younger patients
Interaction
- Topical ophthalmic use only
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or any component of the formulation
Side Effects
- Most frequently reported ocular adverse event: conjunctival redness
- Other reported adverse events included blurred vision, eye pain, eye irritation, eye pruritus, and headache
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Caution advised when administered to nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- For topical ophthalmic use only
- Should not be injected subconjunctivally or directly into the anterior chamber of the eye
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
- Patients should not wear contact lenses during therapy
- Shake well before use
