Description
- Histamine analog
- Relieves vertigo symptoms
- Improves circulation in inner ear
- Reduces pressure on membranous labyrinth
- Relieves symptoms of Meniere's disease
Pharmacology
- Multifactorial mechanism of action
- Acts as histamine H1-receptor agonist
- Causes vasodilatory effect
- Increases permeability of blood vessels
- Reduces endolymphatic pressure
- Prevents rupture of labyrinth
- Increases vestibulocochlear blood flow
- Elevates levels of neurotransmitters including serotonin
Dosage & Administration
- Initial oral treatment 8 to 16mg three times daily
- Preferably taken with meals
- Maintenance doses in the range 24-48 mg daily
- Maximum daily dose should not exceed 48mg
- Dosage can be adjusted to suit individual patient needs
- Improvement could be observed after a couple of weeks of treatment
- Not recommended for use in children and adolescents below age 18
- Limited data in the elderly
- Caution advised for patients with hepatic impairment
- Caution advised for patients with renal impairment
Interaction
- No proven cases of hazardous interactions
- Case report of interaction with ethanol
- Potentiation of betahistine with salbutamol
- Concurrent administration of H1 antagonists may cause mutual attenuation of effect
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with phaeochromocytoma
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- No known serious adverse effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Headache
- Rashes
- Pruritus
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety in human pregnancy not completely established
- No known teratogenic effect in animals
- Caution advised for prescribing in pregnancy
- Excreted in breast milk of nursing mothers
- Toxicity to the neonate not known
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution advised for patients with peptic ulcer or history of peptic ulceration
- Caution advised for patients with bronchial asthma
- Caution advised for patients with urticaria, rashes, or allergic rhinitis
- Caution advised for patients with severe hypotension
- Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance should not take this medicine
- Rare reports of drowsiness associated with betahistine
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, ataxia, seizures
- More serious complications observed in cases of intentional overdose
- No specific antidote
- Gastric lavage and symptomatic treatment recommended
