Indications
- Treatment of eczema in children and adults
- Treatment of infantile and discoid eczema
- Treatment of prurigo nodularis
- Treatment of psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
- Treatment of neurodermatoses including lichen simplex and lichen planus
- Treatment of seborrheic dermatitis
- Treatment of contact sensitivity reaction
- Adjunct to systemic steroid therapy in generalized erythroderma
Pharmacology
- Betamethasone Valerate BP is a synthetic adrenocorticosteroid
- Glucocorticoid in nature
- Analog of prednisolone with slight mineral corticosteroid activity
- Anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive activity
- Absorbed from the skin
- Increased percutaneous absorption with inflammation or disease process
- Substantial increase in percutaneous absorption with occlusive dressings
Dosage & Administration
- Apply sparingly to affected area two or three times daily
- Usual maximum duration of therapy is three weeks
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported with Mexiderm Cream/Ointment
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- Contraindicated in rosacea and acne vulgaris
- Contraindicated in perioral dermatitis, perianal, and genital pruritus
- Contraindicated in viral infections of the skin (e.g., herpes simplex, chicken pox)
- Contraindicated in primary infected skin lesions caused by fungi or bacteria
- Contraindicated in dermatoses in children under one year of age
Side Effects
- Local adverse reactions more common with high doses and long-term use
- Local adverse reactions more common with occlusive dressings
- Includes dryness, itching, burning, skin thinning, local irritation
- Includes features of hypercorticism, telangiectasia, striae, skin atrophy
- Includes hypertrichosis, change in pigmentation, secondary infection
- Includes perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin
- Includes acneiform eruption, exacerbation of symptoms
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used extensively in pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Well-tolerated but hypersensitivity signs should be monitored
- Avoid long-term continuous topical therapy, especially in children
- Adrenal suppression may occur without occlusion
- Sufficient systemic absorption may occur with extensive areas of treatment
- Atrophic changes may occur after prolonged treatment on the face or other body areas
- Care needed to prevent entry into the eye if applied to the eyelids
