Description
- Relaxaid is a benzodiazepine sedative indicated for emotional disturbances, functional disturbances in cardiovascular and respiratory systems, gastrointestinal disturbances, urinary tract disturbances, psychosomatic disorders, emotional reactions to chronic organic disease, and as a psychotropic agent for tension and anxiety. It has sedative, muscle-relaxant, and therapeutic effects.
Dosage
- Standard dosage: 1.5-3 mg up to three times daily for outpatient therapy. In severe cases, 6-12 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Elderly and debilitated patients require lower doses. Children dosage ranges from 0.1-0.3 mg/kg body weight.
Mode of Action
- Binds to GABA-A receptor, reducing tension and anxiety in lower dosage, and showing sedative and muscle-relaxant properties in higher dosage.
Administration
- Oral administration in the form of tablets
Interaction
- May be enhanced when combined with centrally active drugs such as antidepressants, hypnotics, narcotics, antipsychotics, sedatives, antiepileptic drugs, sedative antihistamines, anesthetics, and cimetidine. Avoid concomitant intake with alcohol.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to bromazepam, severe respiratory insufficiency, severe hepatic insufficiency, or sleep apnea syndrome.
Side Effects
- Include fatigue, drowsiness, muscle weakness, reduced alertness, confusion, headache, ataxia, and anterograde amnesia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not established for safety during pregnancy; avoid use during lactation as it is excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
- May lead to physical and psychological dependence, with withdrawal symptoms upon termination of treatment. Not recommended for the primary treatment of sleeplessness caused by psychotic illness. Caution should be exercised during activities requiring mental alertness. Gradual dosage reduction is recommended.
