Indications

  • Relief of dry (non-productive) cough
  • Pre & post-operative cough sedation
  • Acute cough of any etiology
  • Whooping cough treatment
  • Cough due to lower respiratory tract infections

Pharmacology

  • Acts directly on the brain's cough center
  • Safe and non-sedating
  • Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
  • Maximum concentration reached within 9 hours
  • Extremely protein-bound
  • Plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours
  • Active metabolites with antitussive action

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet: 2-3 tablets daily
  • Adult dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup: 15 ml 4 times daily
  • Adolescent dosage: 1-2 tablets for those over 12 years old
  • Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup (3-6 yrs): 5 ml 3 times daily
  • Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup (6-12 yrs): 10 ml 3 times daily
  • Adolescent dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup: 15 ml 3 times daily
  • Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops (2 months-1 yrs): 0.50 ml 4 times daily
  • Children dosage: Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops (1-3 yrs): 0.75 ml 4 times daily

Interaction

Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient

  • Good tolerance overall
  • Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo observed in rare cases

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid use during first trimester of pregnancy
  • Caution advised during remainder of pregnancy
  • Carefully weigh benefits against risks during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid concomitant use with expectorants
  • Consult a doctor if cough persists for more than 7 days (3 days in children younger than 12 years)

Overdose Effects

  • Accidental overdose can cause drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension
  • Emergency procedures: activated charcoal, saline laxatives, and standard cardio-respiratory resuscitation
