Indications

  • Relieves dry (non-productive) cough

Pharmacology

  • Acts directly on the brain's cough center
  • Suppresses cough
  • Safe and non-sedating
  • Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration
  • Extremely protein-bound
  • Plasma elimination half-life is about 13 hours
  • Active metabolites have antitussive action

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet: 2-3 tablets daily
  • Adult dosage: Butamirate Citrate syrup: 15 ml 4 times daily
  • Adolescents dosage: 1-2 tablets daily
  • Children (3-6 yrs) dosage: 5 ml 3 times daily
  • Children (6-12 yrs) dosage: 10 ml 3 times daily
  • Adolescents dosage: 15 ml 3 times daily
  • Children (2 months- 1 yr) dosage: 0.50 ml 4 times daily
  • Children (1-3 yrs) dosage: 0.75 ml 4 times daily

Interaction

  • Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient

Side Effects

  • Good tolerance observed
  • Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo in few rare cases

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Caution required during the remainder of pregnancy
  • Benefits should be carefully weighed against the risks during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
  • Consult a doctor if the cough persists for more than 7 days (more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years of age)

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms: drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, hypotension
  • Standard emergency procedures should be followed
