Composition
- Each tablet contains 1250 mg Calcium Carbonate (Coral source)
- Each tablet contains 500 mg elemental Calcium and 200 IU Vitamin D
- Each DX tablet contains 1500 mg Calcium Carbonate (Coral source)
- Each DX tablet contains 600 mg elemental Calcium and 400 IU Vitamin D
- Each effervescent tablet contains 1500 mg Calcium Carbonate (Coral source)
- Each effervescent tablet contains 600 mg elemental Calcium and 400 IU Vitamin D3
Pharmacology
- Vital for a wide variety of bodily functions
- Useful for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and associated fractures
- Essential for healthy bones and aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract
- Stimulates bone formation
- Has synergistic effects on bone growth
- Ensures better absorption due to coral origin
Dosage & Administration
- Take one tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water and drink orally
- Taking with a full stomach ensures better absorption
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce vitamin D absorption
- Interferes with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
- May increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides
- Should be administered at least three hours before certain medications
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria
- Nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the components
- Severe renal insufficiency
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- May cause irritation to the GI tract
- May cause constipation
- Rarely produces hypercalcemia
- May lead to allergic reactions
- May lead to irregular heartbeats
- May cause nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol
- Overdoses should be avoided during pregnancy
- Overdoses should be avoided during lactation
- No indications that vitamin D at therapeutic doses is teratogenic in humans
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Serum calcium levels should be followed during long-term treatment
- Renal function should be monitored
- Monitoring is important in elderly patients and those with a high tendency to calculus formation
- Vitamin D should be used with caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Risks of soft tissue calcification should be considered
- Use with caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
Overdose Effects
- May lead to hypervitaminosis D
- May lead to hypercalcemia
- Symptoms of hypercalcemia may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, and vomiting
- Treatment includes discontinuation and rehydration
