Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise
- Glycemic control
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Pharmacology
- Inhibits subtype-2 sodium-glucose co-transport protein
- Reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidney
- Increases excretion of glucose in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose of 100 mg once daily
- Can be increased to 300 mg once daily
- No dose adjustment required for mild renal impairment
Interaction
- UGT inducers reduce Glicana exposure
- Consider increasing dose from 100 mg to 300 mg
- Glicana may slightly increase the concentration of digoxin
Contraindications
- History of serious hypersensitivity reaction to Canagliflozin
- Severe renal impairment
- End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
- On dialysis patients
Side Effects
- Female genital mycotic infections
- Urinary tract infection
- Increased urination
- Low blood pressure
- Increases potassium blood levels (hyperkalemia)
- Low blood glucose
- Increases Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL-C)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Discontinue drug or nursing for nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus
- Not for diabetic ketoacidosis
