Indications

Composition

  • Each capsule contains Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
  • Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult: One Capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa and penecillamine
  • Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics, reducing plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of its component
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation and diarrhoea
  • Possibility of dark stool
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • First trimester use to be avoided if possible
  • Definite evidence required for Iron deficiency in first trimester
  • Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency justified during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care in patients with Iron overload states
  • Failure to respond to treatment necessitates further investigations
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms may include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak, rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
