Bactericidal mode of action
Disrupts synthesis of peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls
Pharmacological mechanism similar to penicillins
Administered intravenously over 30 minutes
Interacts with aminoglycosides and potent diuretics
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, penicillins, or betalactum antibiotics
Pregnancy Category B; caution in use during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions against prescribing in absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection
Potential for overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms with prolonged use
