Cefepime is indicated for the treatment of pneumonia (moderate to severe), febrile neutropenia, uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and complicated intra-abdominal infections (used in combination with metronidazole). It has the same mode of action as other beta-lactam antibiotics, disrupting the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls. Dosage and administration vary based on the infection being treated, and renal function should be monitored carefully if high doses of aminoglycosides are to be administered with Cepime. The product is contraindicated in patients with immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or the cephalosporin class of antibiotics, and is classified as Pregnancy Category B. Precautions and warnings include avoiding use in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection, and monitoring for overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms. Pediatric use, geriatric use, impaired hepatic function, impaired renal function, overdose effects, reconstitution, and storage conditions are also detailed.
