Indications

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Clinical efficacy against Streptococcus pneumonia
  • Clinical efficacy against Streptococcus pyogenes
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • About 40%-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended pediatric dosage based on weight and age
  • Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
  • Administered with caution in patients with marked renal impairment

Interaction

  • Potential to increase prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Alteration of normal flora and potential overgrowth of clostridia
  • Avoid use in pregnancy or nursing mothers unless essential

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • No significant removal by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Profile similar to patients treated at recommended doses
