Indications
- Treats Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treats Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treats Urinary Tract Infections
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumonia
- Effective against Streptococcus pyogenes
- Effective against Escherichia coli
- Effective against Proteus mirabilis
- Effective against Klebsiella species
- Effective against Haemophilus influenzae
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
Pharmacology
- Third generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40-50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 to 14 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dose in typhoid is 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily
- Recommended dosage for children by age range
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
- Frequent gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system effects: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects
- Miscellaneous reactions: genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Cephalosporin should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Treatment alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy or in nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in small numbers of healthy adult volunteers receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from the profile seen in patients treated at the recommended doses
