Description

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of pathogens
  • Absorption of 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food

Indications

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, etc.

Mode of action

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Dosage and administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, stool changes)
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, pruritis, urticaria, etc.)
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry changes
  • Other possible reactions include genital pruritis and vaginitis

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Caution advised during pregnancy, use only if clearly needed
  • Caution advised during lactation, not known if excreted in human milk

Precautions and warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
