Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of pathogens
- Absorption of 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Indications
- Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, etc.
Mode of action
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
Dosage and administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage for children based on age and weight
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, stool changes)
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia
- Headache, dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, pruritis, urticaria, etc.)
- Hematological and clinical chemistry changes
- Other possible reactions include genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy and lactation
- Caution advised during pregnancy, use only if clearly needed
- Caution advised during lactation, not known if excreted in human milk
Precautions and warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
Overdose effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
