Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Clinical efficacy against pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis
- Treatment of infections caused by beta-lactamase positive and negative organisms
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal activity
- Interference in bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40% to 50%
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Recommended dosage in children based on age and weight
- Special dosage for typhoid treatment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times in some patients
- Careful administration in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting gastrointestinal disturbances
- Headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash and pruritis
- Reported hematological and clinical chemistry changes
- Possible genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution in use during pregnancy
- Uncertain excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Consideration for partial cross-allergenicity with penicillins
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Potential alteration of normal flora of the colon

- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not significantly removed by dialysis
