Description
- An orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Indicated for upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and otitis media
- Bactericidal against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued up to 14 days if required
- Interferes with the formation of bacterial protective covering, essential for bacterial development, preventing bacterial growth
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily, dosage for children varies with age
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients, caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
- Common side effects include diarrhea, stool changes, nausea, abdominal pain, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia
- Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation, use only if clearly needed and caution advised when administered to nursing women
- Caution advised in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients, and markedly impaired renal function
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose, no specific antidote exists
