Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days; may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to severity of infection
  • Dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Dosage in renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times seen in some patients
  • Care needed in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Majority of adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting
  • Common gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Central nervous system effects
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with caution to patients showing hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alters normal flora of colon and may lead to antibiotic-associated diarrhea

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Adverse reactions in healthy adults receiving single doses up to 2 g did not differ from profile seen in patients
