Indications

  • Treatment for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment for Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Approximately 40%-50% absorption rate

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily, single dose or two divided doses
  • Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day, administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
  • Dosage in Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment in severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
  • Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
  • Commonly associated with gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea and stool changes
  • Other side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry reactions, and miscellaneous reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Cautious use for penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Use in pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless essential by the physician

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • Polyxim is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Adverse reactions at high doses did not differ significantly from the profile seen in patients at recommended doses
