Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- 40%-50% absorption rate with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment: 7 days (up to 14 days if required)
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily (single dose or in two divided doses)
- Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
- Dosage adjustments in elderly and patients with renal impairment
Interaction
- Increased prothrombin times in some patients
- Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Well-tolerated with mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Common side effects: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, rash, pruritus
- Infrequent and reversible hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited information on use during pregnancy
- Caution advised during lactation due to unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs and penicillin-sensitive patients
- Use with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alters normal flora of the colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhea
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote available
- Not removed significantly by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
