Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • 40%-50% absorption rate with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment: 7 days (up to 14 days if required)
  • Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily (single dose or in two divided doses)
  • Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Dosage adjustments in elderly and patients with renal impairment

Interaction

  • Increased prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Well-tolerated with mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
  • Common side effects: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, rash, pruritus
  • Infrequent and reversible hematological and clinical chemistry reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited information on use during pregnancy
  • Caution advised during lactation due to unknown excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs and penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Use with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alters normal flora of the colon leading to antibiotic-associated diarrhea

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote available
  • Not removed significantly by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
