Functionality
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Treatment for specific acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Preventive measure from forming the bacterial protective covering
- Works by preventing the formation of bacterial cell wall
- Absorption is about 40% to 50%
- Absorption not significantly modified by the presence of food
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
- Dosage should be adjusted in severe renal impairment
- Usual dosage for children 5-10 years: 10 ml daily
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials
- Most frequent side-effects are diarrhea and stool changes
- Gastrointestinal side-effects include nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting
- Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions include thrombocytopenia and leukopenia
- Central nervous system reactions may include headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions may include rash, pruritis, and urticaria
Interaction & Contraindications
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Overdose Effects
- Polyxim DS should be given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics alters the normal flora of the colon
- Overdose symptoms may require gastric lavage
- No specific antidote exists
