Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
  • Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily according to severity of infection
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
  • Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
  • Frequent side-effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
  • Other side-effects include headache, dizziness, rash, pruritis, thrombocytopenia
  • Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests observed

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to cross-allergenicity
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Treatment alters normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated; no specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  • Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers at doses up to 2 g did not differ from profile seen in patients treated at recommended doses
