Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily according to severity of infection
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day administered as a single dose or in two divided doses
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed
- Frequent side-effects include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain
- Other side-effects include headache, dizziness, rash, pruritis, thrombocytopenia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests observed
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients due to cross-allergenicity
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Treatment alters normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated; no specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
- Adverse reactions in healthy adult volunteers at doses up to 2 g did not differ from profile seen in patients treated at recommended doses
