Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections

Pharmacology

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Adult dosage range: 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight

Interaction

  • May increase prothrombin times in some patients
  • Caution advised in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Commonly observed side effects including gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes
  • Pseudomembranous colitis reported

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited data available, caution advised during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Give with caution to patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Cephalosporins should be given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Xylocef is not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
