Description

  • Cefixime is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organism
  • Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Broad spectrum of gram positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days
  • Adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
  • Children dosage is 8 mg/kg/day, varied by age and weight
  • Caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
  • Side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry effects, and miscellaneous reactions
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed, caution for nursing women
  • Use caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs, penicillin-sensitive patients, and severely impaired renal function

Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days
  • Adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily according to the severity of the infection
  • Children dosage is 8 mg/kg/day, varied by age and weight
  • Caution required in patients with impaired renal function

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in a few patients, caution required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
