Indications
Duracef is indicated for the treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Urinary Tract Infections, and other acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
Pharmacology
Cefixime is a third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration. It is bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria at easily achievable plasma concentrations.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and children over 10 years:
- Recommended dosage of 200-400 mg daily
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Elderly: Same dose as recommended for adults with dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Children:
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Specific daily doses based on age and weight
- Safety and efficacy not established in children aged less than 6 months
Interaction
Increases in prothrombin times may occur in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy.
Contraindications
Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings
- Hypersensitivity: Should be given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs.
- Renal function: Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function.
- Use in pregnancy and lactation: Not recommended unless considered essential by the physician
Overdose Effects
Gastric lavage may be indicated; no specific antidote exists. Not removed in significant quantities from circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
