Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Demonstrated efficacy against specific pathogens
  • Stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interferes in bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • About 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual 7-day treatment course, extendable to 14 days if necessary
  • Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily for severity of infection
  • Elderly patients may be given same dose as adults
  • Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Safe use in renal impairment
  • Dose and regimen for patients maintained on chronic dialysis

Interaction

  • Possible increase in prothrombin times in some patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Generally well tolerated
  • Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials
  • Frequent gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Possible central nervous system effects
  • Hypersensitivity reactions like rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry effects including thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and eosinophilia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution for use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Unknown excretion in human milk, caution for use during nursing

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
  • Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alteration of normal colon flora and potential for antibiotic-associated diarrhea

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote available
  • Adverse reactions in healthy volunteers at doses up to 2 g did not differ from recommended doses profile
