Indications

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Urinary Tract Infections

Bactericidal activity

  • Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms

Bacterial susceptibility

  • Clinical efficacy against Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella species, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Enterobacter species

Mode of action

  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme

Absorption

  • 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food

Dosage and administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage in Renal Impairment guidelines

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times have been noted in some patients
  • Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Cautious use for penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Use in pregnancy and lactation precautions

Overdose effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
