Description
Orbixim is an orally active cephalosporin antibiotic with marked in-vitro bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is indicated for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and more. The product is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. It functions by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall and is bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria at easily achievable plasma concentrations.

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
DosageAndAdministration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended children dosage: 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in renal impairment should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
SideEffects
- Most adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting
- Frequent side-effects include diarrhea and stool changes
- Other side-effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, hypersensitivity reactions, hematological and clinical chemistry changes, and miscellaneous reactions
