Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal activity against a wide spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms
  • Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • Resistance to penicillins and some cephalosporins

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, extendable to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
  • Dosage adjustment for elderly and children based on severity of infection

Interaction

  • Potential increase in prothrombin times in some patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances including diarrhea and stool changes
  • Central nervous system effects like headache and dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, pruritis, and urticaria
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry effects such as thrombocytopenia and leukopenia

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Considered for use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution advised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
