Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
  • Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of organisms

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • 40%-50% absorption rate with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be extended to 14 days if required
  • Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
  • Dosage in Renal Impairment: adjusted according to creatinine clearance

Interaction

  • Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
  • Careful use with patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self limiting adverse reactions
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhoea, nausea)
  • Central nervous system effects (headache, dizziness)
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria)
  • Hematological and clinical chemistry effects (thrombocytopenia, leukopenia)
  • Transient change in liver and renal function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Caution required during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution with patients showing hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Caution with penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alteration of normal flora of the colon and potential overgrowth of clostridia with broad spectrum antibiotics

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed significantly by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
