Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of organisms
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- 40%-50% absorption rate with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be extended to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in Renal Impairment: adjusted according to creatinine clearance
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
- Careful use with patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self limiting adverse reactions
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhoea, nausea)
- Central nervous system effects (headache, dizziness)
- Hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria)
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects (thrombocytopenia, leukopenia)
- Transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution required during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution with patients showing hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution with penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alteration of normal flora of the colon and potential overgrowth of clostridia with broad spectrum antibiotics
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed significantly by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
