Description
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal activity against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Indicated for upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
- Indicated for lower respiratory tract infections
- Indicated for urinary tract infections
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Can be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Interaction with anticoagulant therapy
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Alters the normal flora of the colon
- Gastric lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote for overdose

Indications
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections, e.g. bronchitis
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
- Kills bacteria by interfering in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzyme
- Absorption of about 40% to 50% whether administered with or without food
Dosage and administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- May be continued for up to 14 days if required
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in renal impairment
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in a few patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side effects
- Majority of adverse reactions observed in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Diarrhoea and stool changes
- Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, flatulence
- Headache and dizziness
- Allergies in the form of rash, pruritis, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia
- Thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
- Genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy and lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions and warnings
- Given with caution to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics alters the normal flora of the colon
Overdose effects
- Gastric lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
