Indications

  • Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections

  • Clinical efficacy against Escherichia coli
  • Clinical efficacy against Haemophilus influenzae
  • Clinical efficacy against Moraxella catarrhalis
  • High stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

Pharmacology

  • Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal against broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Interference in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Approximately 40-50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily
  • Recommended dosage for children based on age and weight
  • Typhoid specific dosage for children
  • Dosage adjustment for renal impairment
  • Administration in the presence of impaired renal function

Interaction

  • Potential increase in prothrombin times in few patients
  • Care required in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

  • Caution required when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution required in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Cautious use in penicillin-sensitive patients
  • Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Alteration of normal flora of the colon and associated risks
  • Avoid use in pregnancy or in nursing mothers unless considered essential by the physician

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric Lavage may be indicated
  • No specific antidote exists
  • Not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
