Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections
- Treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days, can be continued up to 14 days if required
- Recommended daily adult dosage is 200-400 mg depending on infection severity
- Recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage for Children in typhoid is 5 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10-14 days
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
- Care should be taken in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Frequent side-effects include diarrhea and stool changes
- Other side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rash, thrombocytopenia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Caution advised during pregnancy, use only if clearly needed
- Caution advised during lactation, excretion in human milk is unknown
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution to patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administered with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Broad spectrum antibiotics may alter normal flora of the colon
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote exists
- Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
