Indications
- Treats Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)
- Treats Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
- Bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Marked in-vitro bactericidal activity
- Effective against Streptococcus pneumonia
- Effective against Streptococcus pyogenes
- Effective against Escherichia coli

- Effective against Klebsiella species
- Effective against Haemophilus influenzae
- Highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes

- Treats bronchitis
- Orally active cephalosporin antibiotic
Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Bactericidal against broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
- Interferes in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
- Highly stable in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- About 40% to 50% absorption rate with or without food
- Oral administration
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 to 14 days
- Recommended adult dosage is 200-400 mg daily
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal impairment
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Renal function assessment
- Dosage adjustment in elderly patients
- Usual dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day
- Administered as a single dose or two divided doses
Interaction
- Increases in prothrombin times observed in some patients
- Care needed in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials
- Most frequent side-effects are diarrhea and stool changes
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system effects: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Caution in patients with severe renal function impairment
- Altered normal flora of the colon
- Use not recommended in pregnancy or nursing mothers
- Potential of partial cross-allergenicity between penicillins and cephalosporins
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated in case of overdose
- No specific antidote available
- Not removed in significant quantities by dialysis
