Indications

  • Treatment of acute otitis media

  • Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia
  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Treatment of skin and skin structure infections
  • Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea
  • Treatment of rectal gonococcal infections in women
  • Treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms

Pharmacology

  • Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
  • Good stability to beta lactamases
  • Activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria
  • Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
  • Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in urine

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage for adults and adolescents
  • Dosage for infants and pediatric patients
  • Dosing intervals for patients with severe renal impairment
  • No dose adjustment necessary for patients with liver cirrhosis

Interaction

  • Interaction with antacids
  • Interaction with probenecid
  • Close monitoring advised with nephrotoxic drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporins

Side Effects

  • Side effects include diarrhea, nausea, fungal infections, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough
  • Incidence of fungal skin rash higher in children

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Neither teratogenic nor embryocidal in animal trials
  • No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human milk, decision required to discontinue breast-feeding or drug

Precautions & Warnings

  • Reduce total daily dose in patients with reduction in urinary output
  • Administer with caution to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
  • Repeated evaluation of patient's condition essential
