Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by specific bacteria
- Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by specific bacteria

Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Stable to beta lactamases
- Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite as Cefpodoxime
- Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in urine
Dosage & Administration
- Specific dosage for adults and adolescents for various infections
- Specific dosage for infants and pediatric patients for specific infections
- Dosing intervals adjustment for patients with severe renal impairment
- No dose adjustment necessary for patients with liver cirrhosis
Interaction
- Interaction with antacids leading to reduction in peak plasma level and absorption
- Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid resulting in increased AUC
- Need for close monitoring of renal function when administered concomitantly with nephrotoxic drugs
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, skin & vaginal fungal infection, abdominal pain, headache, chest pain, myalgia, dyspepsia, dizziness, vertigo, cough
- Higher incidence of fungal skin rash in children than in adults
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not teratogenic or embryocidal in animal trials
- No adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, decision needed regarding breastfeeding vs discontinuing the drug
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced total daily dose in patients with reduction in urinary output due to renal insufficiency
- Caution with concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms
- Repeated evaluation of patient's condition essential
