Indications
- Treatment of acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
- Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae or H. influenza
- Treatment of skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
- Treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by E. coli
- Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Pharmacology
- Oral 3rd generation cephalosporin
- Good stability to beta lactamases
- Activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria
- Prodrug with active metabolite Cefpodoxime
- Approximately 29 to 33% excreted unchanged in the urine in 12 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage for pharyngitis/tonsillitis: 100 mg 12 hourly for 5 to 10 days
- Adult dosage for skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg 12 hourly for 7 to 14 days
- Pediatric dosage for acute otitis media: 5 mg/kg body weight 12 hourly for 5 days
- Dosing interval adjustment for patients with severe renal impairment
Interaction
- Reduction in peak plasma level by high doses of antacids
- Inhibition of renal excretion by probenecid
- Close monitoring of renal function advised for nephrotoxic drugs administration
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Cefpodoxime or cephalosporin antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Neither teratogenic nor embryocidal in animal trials
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk, decision required for breast-feeding continuation
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced total daily dose for patients with reduction in urinary output
- Caution in patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Risk of overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms with prolonged use
