Description

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action
- Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis
- Susceptible to gram-negative and gram-positive organisms
Dosage
- Usual adult dosage of 1 gram every 8 to 12 hours
- Dosage depends on susceptibility of organisms and patient condition and renal function
Administration
- Intravenous or deep IM injection
- Reconstituted with Sterile Water for Injection
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ceftazidime or cephalosporins
Side Effects
- Local reactions following IV injection
- Allergic and gastrointestinal reactions
- Pruritus, rash, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Excreted in human milk in low concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduce dosage in renal insufficiency
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with history of gastrointestinal disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in impaired renal function
- Usable in peritoneal dialysis and CAPD
- No adjustment for patients with hepatic dysfunction
Overdose Effects
- Seizure activity, encephalopathy, neuromuscular excitability, coma
