Indications

  • Treatment of acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Treatment of acute bacterial otitis media
  • Treatment of pharyngitis and tonsillitis

Pharmacology

  • Semi-synthetic Cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Bactericidal action
  • Binds to essential target proteins of the bacterial cell wall
  • Inhibition of cell-wall synthesis

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult Dosage for Otitis Media: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Otitis Media: >6 months: 9 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Adult Dosage for Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis: >6 months: 9 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Adult Dosage for Bronchitis: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Bronchitis: >12 years: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Adult Dosage for Cystitis: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 7 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Cystitis: >12 years: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 7 days
  • Adult Dosage for Pneumonia: 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Pneumonia: >12 years: 200 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days
  • Adult Dosage for Sinusitis: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 to 14 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Sinusitis: >12 years: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 to 14 days
  • Adult Dosage for Urinary Tract Infection: 400 mg orally every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric Dosage for Urinary Tract Infection: >6 months: 9 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days

Interaction

Theophylline & Antacid do not alter the pharmacokinetic profile of Ceftiben. Ranitidine increases the Cmax & AUC of Ceftiben.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Caution should be exercised when used in nursing women.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged treatment may result in the possible emergence and overgrowth of resistant organisms
  • Observation of the patient is essential
  • Dose adjustment may be required in patients with varying degrees of renal insufficiency
  • Prescribed with caution to individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis

Use in Special Populations

  • Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance (CrCl)
  • Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment not necessary

Reconstitution

  • Reconstitution involves mixing purified water with granules
  • Use a measuring cup or dropper for reconstituted suspension
  • Prepared suspension to be consumed within 14 days of preparation if kept in a refrigerator
  • Shake the bottle well each time before use

Storage Conditions

Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. For Suspension: After reconstitution, the suspension may be used for 14 days while stored at 2°C to 8°C. Keep out of reach of children
