Description
- Indicated for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Bactericidal action against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Well-tolerated with few side effects
- Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin and Pseudomembranous Colitis
Dosage
- Dosage varies for different infections and age groups
- Can be taken without regard to food
- Adolescents and adults: 250-1000 mg twice daily for 5-20 days
- Paediatric patients: Doses based on weight and frequency
Mode of Action
- Interferes with the transpeptidation process in bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Clavulanic acid irreversibly binds to beta-lactamase enzymes and inactivates them
Interactions
- Probenecid increases serum concentration of Cefuroxime-Clavulanic Acid by 50%
- Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime
Contraindications
- Allergy to cephalosporin
- Pseudomembranous Colitis

- Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms
- Rarely renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in first trimester if possible
- Safe for later pregnancy to treat infections
- Excreted in breast milk in small quantities

- Use with care in patients receiving potent diuretics
- Caution in patients with colitis history
