Description

  • Roxiclav 500 mg is a second generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by sensitive bacteria.

Pharmacology

  • Cefuroxime: Bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Clavulanic acid: Beta-lactamase inhibitor protecting Cefuroxime from degradation

Indications

  • Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Acute Bacterial Otitis Media caused by various bacteria
  • Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
  • Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infections
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  • Bone and Joint Infections
  • Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea
  • Early Lyme Disease (erythema migrans)
  • Septicemia
  • Meningitis
  • Switch therapy (Injectable to oral)

Interaction

  • Concomitant administration with probenecid increases serum concentration by 50%
  • Drugs reducing gastric acidity may reduce bioavailability

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to cephalosporin
  • Pseudomembranous Colitis
