Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Relief of symptoms associated with perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Treatment of uncomplicated skin manifestations of chronic idiopathic urticaria
  • Treatment of allergen induced asthma

Pharmacology

  • Potent H1 receptor antagonist
  • No significant anticholinergic effects
  • No significant antiserotonic effects
  • Inhibits histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction
  • Reduces migration of inflammatory cells
  • Reduces release of mediators associated with late phase of allergic reaction

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls daily
  • Children (6 years and older) dosage: 1 teaspoonful twice daily
  • Children (2-6 years) dosage: 1 teaspoonful once daily
  • Children (6 months to 2 years) dosage: 1/2 teaspoonful once daily
  • Maximum dose for children (12-23 months): 1/2 teaspoonful every 12 hours
  • Injectable dosage form for intravenous administration only
  • Recommended dosage for adults and adolescents (12 years and older): 10 mg intravenously
  • Recommended dosage for children (6 to 11 years) depending on symptom severity: 5 mg or 10 mg intravenously
  • Recommended dosage for children (6 months to 5 years): 2.5 mg intravenously

  • No clinically significant drug interactions found with Azithromycin
  • No clinically significant drug interactions found with Pseudoephedrine
  • No clinically significant drug interactions found with Ketoconazole
  • No clinically significant drug interactions found with Erythromycin
  • No significant drug interactions found with other drugs

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Cetirizine
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Hydroxyzine

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • US FDA Pregnancy Category: B
  • No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Cautious use during pregnancy if clearly needed
  • Cetirizine excreted in human milk, caution in nursing women

  • Caution when driving or operating heavy machinery

Use in Special Populations

  • Reduced clearance and increased half-life in patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment
  • Reduced clearance and increased half-life in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment
  • Plasma levels unaffected by hemodialysis
  • Safety demonstrated in pediatric patients aged 6 months to 5 years
  • Reduced clearance in elderly patients
