Pharmacology

  • Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an alkylamine antihistamine
  • Potent histamine H1-receptor blocking agent
  • Less sedation than promethazine
  • Competitively blocks H1-receptor

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose is 4 mg every 4-6 hours
  • Maximum 24 mg daily for adults
  • 2 mg every 4-6 hours for children aged 6-12 years
  • Maximum 12 mg daily for children aged 6-12 years
  • 1 mg every 4-6 hours for children aged 2-5 years
  • Maximum 6 mg daily for children aged 2-5 years
  • 1 mg twice daily for children aged 1-2 years
  • Below 1 year the use of Chlorpheniramine Maleate is not recommended

Interaction

  • Incompatible with calcium chloride
  • Incompatible with kanamycin sulfate
  • Incompatible with noradrenaline acid tartrate
  • Incompatible with pentobarbital sodium
  • Incompatible with meglumine adipiodone

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to chlorpheniramine
  • Newborn or premature infants

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not to be used in lactating mothers
  • Avoid during the first trimester of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with glaucoma
  • Use with caution in patients with prostatic hypertrophy
  • Caution in driving vehicles during therapy
  • Caution in operating machinery during therapy

Overdose Effects

  • CNS depression
  • CNS stimulation
  • Tinnitus
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Ataxia
  • Hypotension
  • Stimulation and atropine-like signs
  • More likely in children
