Pharmacology
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an alkylamine antihistamine, one of the most potent H1-receptor blocking agents, causing less sedation than promethazine. It exerts its effects by competitively blocking the H1-receptor.
Dosage & Administration
- Adult: Usual dose is 4 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 24 mg daily
- Child:
- 6-12 years: 2 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 12 mg daily
- 2-5 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 6 mg daily
- 1-2 years: 1 mg twice daily
- Below 1 year not recommended
Interaction
Reported to be incompatible with calcium chloride, kanamycin sulfate, noradrenaline acid tartrate, pentobarbital sodium, and meglumine adipiodone
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the agent, newborn or premature infants

Not recommended for use in lactating mothers and during the first trimester of pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
Caution in patients with glaucoma and prostatic hypertrophy. Use caution when driving vehicles and operating machinery
Overdose Effects
CNS depression, CNS stimulation, tinnitus, blurred vision, dizziness, ataxia, hypotension. More likely in children are stimulation signs and symptoms such as dry mouth, fixed dilated pupils, flushing, hyperthermia, gastrointestinal symptoms
