Pharmacology
- Alkylamine antihistamine
- Histamine H1-receptor blocking agent
- Less sedation than promethazine
- Competitively blocks H1-receptor
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dose: 4 mg every 4-6 hours
- Maximum adult daily dose: 24 mg
- 6-12 years: 2 mg every 4-6 hours
- Maximum child daily dose: 12 mg
- 2-5 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours
- Maximum child daily dose: 6 mg
- 1-2 years: 1 mg twice daily
- Not recommended below 1 year
Interaction
- Incompatible with calcium chloride
- Incompatible with kanamycin sulfate
- Incompatible with noradrenaline acid tartrate
- Incompatible with pentobarbital sodium
- Incompatible with meglumine adipiodone
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the agent

Overdose Effects
- CNS depression (sedation, apnea, CV collapse)
- CNS stimulation (insomnia, hallucination, tremors, convulsions)
- Tinnitus
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Hypotension
- More likely in children: Stimulation and atropine-like signs and symptoms (dry mouth, fixed dilated pupils, flushing, hyperthermia, GI symptoms)
