Indications
- Treatment of major depressive episodes
- Treatment of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia
- Treatment of social anxiety disorder
- Treatment of generalised anxiety disorder
- Treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder
Pharmacology
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
- Pure S-enantiomer
- Selective inhibition of 5-HT reuptake
Dosage
- Maximum daily dose of 20 mg
- Usual dosage of 10 mg once daily
- Individual patient response
- Antidepressant response duration of 2-4 weeks
- Consolidation of response for at least 6 months
Administration
- Once daily administration
- Can be taken with or without food
Interaction
- 2 weeks gap before starting MAOI after stopping SSRI
- 1 week gap before starting MAOI after stopping SSRI
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Escitalopram
- Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase/pimozide
Side Effects
- Less sedating than tricyclic antidepressants
- Fewer antimuscarinic and cardiotoxic effects
- Gastrointestinal effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Weight changes

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Consider risks and benefits during third trimester
- Excreted in human breast milk

Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
- Discontinue if convulsions develop
- History of mania
- Cardiac disease
- Diabetes mellitus
- Glaucoma
- Use with drugs that increase risk of bleeding
- Hepatic and renal impairment
Use in Special Populations
- Initial dose of 5 mg for elderly patients
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years
- Dosage adjustment for renal impairment
- Caution with severely reduced hepatic function
- Consideration for poor metabolizers of CYP2C19
- Gradual reduction of dose when stopping treatment
